When we compare the two, we see a change of 1.75 × 1011 J. For most of us, those kinds of numbers do not really connect in our brains. Think of it this way: this would be like picking up a small bowling ball and throwing it 7.46 miles. At average walking speed, it would take you about two and a half hours to hike over to where it landed.

Satellite speed

Of course, we can’t just plop a satellite up there. To get it to circle the earth, the gravity pulling it toward the Earth has to be offset by the speed at which the satellite is trying to move forward in a straight line. At each altitude that speed will be different, so the telecommunications company needs to figure out the right speed for the altitude of 12,000 km.
